Testing for bath salts increasing

Staff Report

Testing for bath salts has a local lab finding it hard not to get behind.

The Miami Valley Regional Crime Lab is getting the bath salts drug to test at such an increase, officials say education is needed so that it is better recognized.

Lab officials plan to meet with the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association to educate police and drug task force officers about the chemicals, which are dangerous for officers to handle.

A statewide ban on the sale of bath salts went into effect in October 2011.

Bath salts are intended for substance abuse, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those who use the drug have experienced hallucinations, paranoia, seizures and sometimes get violent.

Many lab tests for bath salts are primarily from busts of stores caught selling it.
