Texting Used In Inappropriate Teacher-Student Relationships

Some local parents never thought it would happen to their daughter.

"It was hell and her senior year of high school should have been a joy for her, but it was horrible, absolutely horrible," said the girl's father.

They had seen in the news the many respected coaches and trusted teachers being sent to prison for having a romantic relationship with a student. However, they never dreamed their own daughter would be a victim.

"We walk in there and they tell us she was with one of her teachers, total shock," he said.

Police found their 17-year-old daughter in a car, partially clothed with 32- year old Eric Williams, a married father of five and a teacher at Piqua's Vocational School.

The father of the girl said, "When they wanted to communicate it was all texting."

Williams lost his teaching license and is serving two years in prison for sexual battery.

In 2005, the number of teacher-student affairs was 22. In four years, the number climbed to 66.

Experts said things like texting and social media are exploding even faster and that is how teens and teachers are communicating.

14,000 text messages were sent between a 15-year-old girl and her 39-year-old soccer coach in Troy.

Expert Cynthia Gevedon said "I have to believe there is some kind of emotional disconnect."

Gevedon is a forensic interviewer at Michael's House in Greene County. She talks with teen victims of teacher sexual abuse. She says the teacher or coach fills an emotional gap the student may not be getting at home.

"I now have someone that is listening to me, believes in me, and it seems like they are really trying to help me," said Gevedon.

Texting and social media gives them quick, private communication.

Gevedon said, "It becomes an opportunity for them 24-7 to be able to have that immediate connect."

She said parents have to be vigilant.

"Monitor cell phone records, check text messages, check Facebook accounts," Gevedon said.
