CLARK COUNTY, Ohio —

Police suspect alcohol was a factor early this morning when a 61-year-old man crashed his truck and knocked out power for some customers in Clark County.

Martin Harness, of New Carlisle, was driving on Johnson Road near Shrine Road around 2 a.m. when he drifted all the way over to the wrong side of the street, hit the culvert and his truck snapped a guide wire. The wire wrapped around live power lines, knocking out electricity in the area.

Dayton Power & Light and Time Warner Cable crews responded and restored service within about three hours. About 1,700 customers were without power after the crash.

"After he made impact with the guide wire, it made it up into the power lines and shorted it out,"  said Tim Durham, of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Harness was not injured in the crash and refused a sobriety test.

"We did suspect alcohol on the driver," Durham said. "He's been placed in custody."
