Vacant House Fire Forces Neighbors Out As Fire Spreads

DAYTON, Ohio —

A family of six said they had a scary wake-up call Monday morning when Dayton police officers banged on the door, shouting for them to get up and get out. Police told the family the house next door was on fire.

Amber Lindsay talked with Newscenter Seven and said she could see flames everywhere and quickly moved to make sure her children made it out alive. "I've got a one-month-old little girl and a one-year-old boy and I had to wrap them in blankets and get out of the house" said Lindsey.

The fire was reported on Drake Avenue between North MaiStreet and Riverside Drive in Dayton about 4 a.m.

Firefighters said the flames were coming out of the windows and through the roof of the home when they pulled up and the front porch collapsed as they walked up. That forced them to stay outside to fight the flames, using ladder trucks to stream water down from above onto the flames.

Fire officials said the fire started in what appeared to be a vacant house and then spread to the roofs of the two houses on either side.

Fire officials said neighbors told them that no one was living in the house where the fire started but said that it appeared that someone may have been moving in, or attempting to move in, within the last couple of days. That house is considered a total loss.

Firefighters are trying to track down the building's owner but say no one was inside the home when the fire began.

Arson investigators were called to the scene to try to determine what sparked the flames. Firefighters said they have no reason right now to believe the fire is suspicious.
