Will jobs be cut at Wright-Patt AFB?

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB, Ohio —

The Miami Valley's largest employer could be forced to cut jobs. The Air Force is reviewing cost-saving measures at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

The U.S. Department of Defense faces about $450 billion in cuts over the next 10 years and that could mean major operation changes at the base.

The Air Force is going to be looking at the operation of the Air Force Materiel Command, which is headquartered at the base, employing thousands of civilians.

They are doing a review to see how decisions and projects are done, who does them and can there be cuts in there, and it all stems from problems in Washington.

Wright-Patterson is the country's largest Air Force base and it could soon be under attack financially.

Rep. Steve Austria said, "The Air Force is looking at their own budgets to be more cost efficient with the dollars that they have and possibly consolidating missions."

"These are going to be structural changes that we are going to have to ensure Wright-Patt can sustain so that we have a strong national defense for the future," said Rep. Mike Turner.

Austria has invited the Chairman of the House sub-committee responsible for dividing up the money for military construction to tour the base to keep money flowing to the base.

Turner said, "We have a strong argument of why we have one of the strongest work forces in the country when it comes to research and technology and this is where those projects should be."

However, the question at this point, is can that stand up to lingering budget issues in Washington?

"We are certainly going to have to be diligent as a community to protect Wright-Patt and the assets that are here."

Results of the review should be released next month. At this time, it is unclear how this could affect our local economy.
