Woman escapes burning house in Trotwood

TROTWOOD, Ohio —

A woman ran out of her house just moments before it was went up in flames.

The fire happened in a neighborhood on Old Hickory Place near Olive Road just before midnight Wednesday.

The flames started in the garage, where the woman had parked her truck about 10:30 p.m. She said she escaped because her smoke detectors went off, alerting her to a problem.

When firefighters arrived, conditions were so bad, they decided not to send crews inside.

Fire officials said the woman was not injured in the fire. Authorities said the house suffered extensive damage and may be considered a total loss.

"It's so unfortunate that it happened to her. A lot of her memories are in that house of her mom. Her mom passed away a few years ago and that was the first thing she said to me. 'Gayle, I lost all my mom's belongings," said Gayle West, a neighbor.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the blaze.
