Woman Killed While Walking On I-75

By Mike Campbell

MORAINE, Ohio —

An 18-year-old woman was struck and killed while walking on Interstate 75 about 3 a.m. Monday.

Officials at the Montgomery County Coroner's office identified the victim as Michaela West, of Detroit, Michigan.

The accident happened in the southbound lanes between the Dryden Road exit and the Central Avenue-West Carrollton exit.

Police said West was apparently trying to cross the freeway and a big rig traveling in the center lane struck and killed her.

Officers believe she was dragged a few hundred feet down the road and may also have been struck by other passing vehicles.

Investigators said the trucker wasn't even sure what he had hit.

Moraine Police Sgt. Russ Imler said, "The driver thought he hit a deer. He got on the CB(radio), called the truckers behind him and asked them. They also thought he'd hit a deer but told him there was damage to the truck. There were pieces of the truck in the road and he needed to pull over. He didn't find out until later that he'd struck a person."

Police shut down the southbound lanes for their investigation, not re-opening them until about 6:45 a.m. Monday.

Officers said it appeared that West was walking on the freeway after getting out of a taxi.

They said the cab driver picked her up at the Greyhound bus station in downtown Dayton and she told the driver to take her to a motel near the Dayton Mall.

The driver said that about halfway there, West told him she had to get out of the vehicle. In fact, police said she actually opened the door while the taxi was still moving.

Imler said, "The cabbie said the woman appeared to be distraught. We'll have to wait for a coroner's office report to know if she had drugs or alcohol in her system. He was concerned about her safety and for his. Once she got out, he was concerned but didn't want to chase her down. He went to the Sonic restaurant in West Carrollton and called 911."

In the 911 call, the cab driver said, "She jumped out of the car on the freeway." The Dispatcher said, " She jumped out of the the car? "Yes, while I was driving, " said the cab driver.

The cab driver said the woman borrowed his cell phone to call her mother in Florida, them jumed out of the cab.

Investigators think West was killed on impact.

They are checking the trucker's speed but they don't believe the truck driver did anything wrong.

Police do not expect him to face any charges.
