Woman Sentenced For Stealing From Employer

DAYTON, Ohio —

Prosecutors said she stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from her former employer in Huber Heights to buy items for herself and her family.

Now the woman is trading designer clothes and jewelry for a prison jumpsuit.

Tina Jaynes was a 7-year employee of Gemini Eyecare and for the last four years, she served as the executive director.

The owners of the practice said that means that they put a lot of trust in her and they were shocked to learn that she spent her time stealing from them.

Dr. Steven Connett said, "It had a huge impact on our business because we've been unable to give raises to our dedicated employees for the last four years."

Jaynes came to court on Wednesday dressed in a simple green sweatshirt and jeans. It was a far cry from what her peers said they were used to seeing her in when she worked at Gemini Eyecare.

Montgomery County Common Pleas Judge Barbara Gorman said, "She came in with upgraded diamond rings, new clothes, shopping every day with another co-worker. New house, new cars. On and on."

It was a lavish lifestyle for the woman. Then last year, investigators and her former employers discovered how Jaynes was able to live that lifestyle.

Dr. Connett said, "It was shock to us that during the four years she methodically schemed and with premeditation stole more than $284,000. Taking into account the wages and the unreported money she stole, Tina was making almost twice as much income as each of the owners."

Investigators said from September of 2005 to July of 2005, Jaynes wrote checks to herself as payroll advances.

Judge Gorman told Jaynes, "You can say you're sorry, but the fact that you sold the items on E-Bay and never made any attempt to give that money back, shows that any tears you have are crocodile tears."

The judge imposed a four-year prison term, one year short of the maximum sentence. Jaynes was also ordered to pay restitution.

Dr. Connett said, "This has been a no-win situation for either side. However, I feel justice has been served."
