Woman Who Stole $100 Bill Sentenced

XENIA, Ohio —

A woman accused of stealing a $100 from a mother of six who dropped it at a convenience store in Xenia was sentenced on Thursday.

Lashonda Lovette was fined $250 with $100 suspended. She will only have to pay $150.

Lovette was also sentenced to 180 days in jail with 150 of them suspended. She will serve the remaining days on house arrest. The judge ordered her to 50 hours of community service and probation for two years.

Lovette was caught on camera taking the $100 bill at the EZ Stop on Second Street earlier this year.

Police said Lovett is shown in surveillance video picking up a $100 bill just seconds after the customer in front of her dropped it.

"She was not paying attention. She dropped the $100 bill. I seen it, so I picked it up, just like I think anyone would do who doesn't have money. Times are hard you know?" Lovett said.

Shellie Brown is the woman who dropped the cash. She is the mother of six. She contacted News Center 7 after she learned that surveillance cameras captured video of Lovett grabbing her money.

She said, "How do you just take money like that? I would never do that."

Lovett said she took the money because she needs cash. She is 18, has three children and no job. She also said she is living in transitional house, and is going to nursing school.

Prosecutors charged Lovett with misdemeanor theft.

Lovett said she does not feel that she did anything wrong. She said she believes that anyone else would have done it.

According to Lovett, she said she tried to give the money back.

"Someone who knew me and knew her told her I'd give her the money back and she said 'no,' she was pushing it," Lovett said.
