WSU student reports daytime sexual assault

A Wright State University student reported Monday to police that she was sexually assaulted on campus Saturday, Sept. 29 in what is typically a moderately busy part of campus, according to police. Wright State alerted students and staff to the report on Tuesday.

The women told police she was leaving a campus convenience store near The Woods at about 3:30 p.m. “when a group of unidentified subjects covered her head, took her to a wooded area near the store and sexually assaulted her,” according to the safety alert. The woman said the suspects left in an unknown direction, according to the university.

Daytime attacks are unheard-of on campus, according to campus crime prevention officer Patrick Ammon. Sexual assaults typically occur at night and usually involve alcohol and people that know each other or met during the evening, he said.

“We’ve never had a crime specifically like this one happened that I can remember. We’re really trying to pursue every angle possible,” Ammon said.

“We know in the world that things like this do happen sometimes in the daytime,” he added.

Anyone with information about this incident is being asked to call the Wright State University Police Department at (937) 775-2111.

No similar incidents have been reported, according to the university.

Ammon said he frequently gives safety talks to students, who usually feel safe on campus during the daytime, and his top advice is to remain aware of their surroundings. Wright State also has two women’s defense seminars.

“The biggest one is be attentive to your surroundings at all time. The next one is be sure that the police department’s full number is programmed in your cell phone. The other thing is when they go out and about day or night, the safety service is available,” Ammon said. “If they notice something that’s out of place or doesn’t look right, call the police immediately. We’ll come out to a thousand things that are nothing. We’d rather do that.”
