WWI-Replica Aircraft Crashes During Fly-In

WPAFB, Ohio —

Officials at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base said a World War I-replica aircraft crashed around 10:15 a.m. Friday on runway 27 on the grounds of the National Museum of the United State Air Force.

Authorities said the pilot suffered injuries and was flown to a local hospital for treatment. The pilot’s name is not being released.

Investigators said the pilot took the plane up when about 150 feet into the air the engine cut out. They said as the pilot attempted to land the plane, the landing gear gave way.

Officials said that the plane flipped upon landing, trapping the pilot. The pilot suffered a broken nose, among other scraps and bruises.

Authorities said they were concerned because there were propane tanks on board the plane. They feared that the plane would explode.

Investigators said the pilot is a man in his early 50s and is expected to be OK.

The incident occurred during the Dawn Patrol Rendezvous World War I Fly-In at the museum. Officials said trained security forces and emergency crews responded to the scene.

Authorities said Air Force officials will assist the Federal Aviation Administration in the investigation of the accident.
