11 Former Dragons On Reds Opening Day Roster

DAYTON, Ohio —

Eleven former members of the Dayton Dragons have been named to the Cincinnati Reds 2011 Opening Day roster.

The list contains five members of manager Dusty Baker’s starting lineup including reigning National League MVP Joey Votto and Opening Day starting pitcher Edison Volquez.

Drew Stubbs, who played in Dayton in 2007, will bat leadoff for the Reds as they take on the Milwaukee Brewers at Great American Ball Park. Jay Bruce, one of the top prospects in baseball when he played in Dayton in 2006, will bat fifth for the Reds and start in right field. Paul Janish, who spent parts of the 2005 and ’06 seasons in Dayton, will make his first career opening day start for the Reds at shortstop.

Volquez was added to the Dragons roster last September for two starts. He makes his first Opening Day start for Cincinnati today as well.

Baker’s bench will feature catcher Ryan Hanigan (2002-‘03 Dragons), infielder Juan Francisco (2007 Dragons) and outfielder Chris Heisey (2007 Dragons). Meanwhile, starting pitcher Travis Wood, a 10-game winner for the Dragons in 2006, will be joined on the Reds pitching staff by relievers Logan Ondrusek (2006 Dragons) and Jordan Smith (2007 Dragons).

Two former Dragons begin the 2011 season on the major league club’s disabled list. Starting pitchers Homer Bailey (2005 Dragons) and Johnny Cueto (2006 Dragons) are expected back on the active roster soon.

The Reds and Brewers meet today at 2:10 p.m. to open the 2011 season.

The Dragons are set to open their 12th season at Fifth Third Field on Thursday, April 7 against the Bowling Green Hot Rods at 7 p.m.
