DAYTON —

Dayton’s Devin Oliver looks too unimposing to cause much trouble when he maneuvers around the basket for rebounds, which may explain why foes don’t seem to give him as much attention as they do the Flyers’ bigger players.

“I try as much as I can to go to the glass. For the most part, people don’t block me out because I’m crashing from the wing and I can sneak in there and get ‘em,” Oliver said.

The 6-foot-7, 220-pound junior burned another opponent on the backboards, pulling down a career-high 14 to go with 13 points in leading the Flyers to an 81-56 win over Florida Atlantic before 11,553 fans Saturday night.

He had his third double-double of the season and hiked his averages to 10.9 points and 8.7 rebounds. Only two players have averaged more than eight boards for UD since Ryan Perryman led the nation with 12.5 per game in 1997-98: Keith Waleskowski (three times) and Chris Wright (once).

“I’ve heard about the legend of Ryan Perryman being an incredible rebounder,” Oliver said. “And we all know about Chris being an incredible athlete. I’m going to continue to do what got me on the floor in the first place — that’s keep rebounding the ball.”

Freshman forward Jalen Robinson muscled his way to 14 boards for the Flyers, who held the Owls to 30-percent shooting and forced 19 turnovers. Kevin Dillard scored all 14 of his points in the first half as UD built a 37-23 lead.

UD allowed the Owls to cut the gap to 10. But sophomore sub Matt Derenbecker (15 points on five 3-pointers) knocked down a trey to help nudge the lead to 49-33 with 12 minutes to go.

The Flyers (8-2) built a big edge early. Leading 15-14, they stopped the Owls (5-5) for seven straight possessions and ripped off 11 points in a row. The sweetest basket was a give-and-go dunk by Oliver.

“He’s a high-major rebounder for a wing from the perimeter,” UD coach Archie Miller said. “There’s very few people in the country who wouldn’t look at him on film and say, ‘Wow. That guy right there, you’d better put a body on him because he’s coming every time.’

“He’s always been a great defensive rebounder. He’s always given great effort. Last year was a good year for him in rebounds per minute. This year, his goal was to average a double-double. He should be averaging a double-double with the way he plays. He’s getting there.”
