Preview: Dayton vs. Xavier in A-10 tourney

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. —

The No. 6-seed University of Dayton Flyers will face the No. 3 seed Xavier Musketeers in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship. The game will be televised locally on WHIO-TV, carried through WHIO Radio and be available over the Internet with live video, stats and streaming audio via DaytonFlyers.com.
 
Dayton, 20-11 overall and 9-7 in the Atlantic 10, are playing its best basketbal lof late winning six of its last eight. Chris Johnson has been incredibly strong the last eight games, averaging 18.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and shooting .545 from the floor. Since being inserted into the starting lineup, Devin Oliver is averaging 10.4 points and 8.0 rebounds. Kevin Dillard continues to perform at a high level on both ends of the floor, leading the team in scoring (12.9 ppg), assists (6.0 apg) and steals (42).
 
ABOUT XAVIER
The Xavier Musketeers, 19-10 overall, earned the No. 3 seed after finishing conference play with a 10-6 record. XU had three players earn All Atlantic 10 selections. Tu Holloway was named to the A-10 First Team, Mark Lyons earned a Third Team spot and Dezmine Wells made the All-Rookie Team. Holloway leads Xavier in scoring (fifth in the A-10 at 16.7 ppg), assists (fourth in the A-10 at 5.4 apg), steals (eighth in the A-10 at 1.6 spg) and free throw percentage (third in the A-10 at .864). Lyons is second on the team in scoring at (15.7 ppg) and Wells ranks third on the team in both scoring (10.1 ppg) and rebounding (5.1 rpg).
 
SERIES STUFF
UD leads the all-time series 84-73. The two teams split during the regular season with Dayton winning 87-72 at UD Arena and Xavier taking the game at the Cintas Center, 86-83 in overtime. In addition to this series being the most games against any opponent for both schools, the first Xavier varsity basketball game was against Dayton on Feb. 20, 1920 (UD won 24-18). The two teams have met at least once every year since 1946-47. Last season Dayton defeated No. 18 Xavier 68-67 in the A-10 Tournament. UD and XU have met six times in the A-10 Tournament with the Musketeers winning five of six meetings.
 
FLYERS IN THE ATLANTIC 10 TOURNAMENT
This is UD’s 17th season in the Atlantic 10 and in each of those years earned a berth to the A-10 Championship. Last season, the Flyers advanced to the tournament final, but lost to Richmond. The Flyers have an overall record of 20-15 in the tournament. Dayton has won the championship once (2003), placed second twice (2004 and 2011), and tied for third three times (2000, 2002 and 2009).
 
THREE FLYERS EARN ALL ATLANTIC 10 HONORS
Kevin Dillard was named to the Second Team All-Atlantic 10, Chris Johnson was an Honorable Mention selection and Luke Fabrizius was named to the All-Academic Team.
 
JOHNSON & DILLARD NAMED CO-MVP’S AS FLYERS HAND OUT SEASON AWARDS
Chris Johnson and Kevin Dillard were named the White Allen Co-Most Valuable Players at the 2012 University of Dayton Men’s Basketball banquet on Sunday, March 4. The other award winners include:

• Matt Kavanaugh - Chris Daniels most improved player award

• Brian Vonderhaar - John L. Macbeth scholar-athlete

The Dayton-Xavier winner will take on the winner of the Saint Louis-La Salle game in the A-10 semifinals Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.  The game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.

• This is Dayton’s 17th season in the Atlantic 10 and 17th tournament appearance. UD is 20-15 alltime in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
• Kevin Dillard was named second team All-Atlantic 10, Chris Johnson was selected honorable mention and Luke Fabrizius made it to the A-10 All-Academic team.
• Dayton has five consecutive seasons of 20 or more victories. That is the first time that has happened since the 1999-2000 thru 2003-04 seasons.

• In Dayton’s 20 victories the Flyers are shooting .376 from 3-point range. In the 11 losses, UD’s shooting percentage drops to .295 from beyond the arc.
• Dayton possesses nine victories in 16 games against Top 100 RPI opponents.
• The Flyers ranks fourth in the NCAA in free throw percentage (.774).
• Speaking of free throws, the Flyers have shot 70 percent or better in 14 straight games.
• Chris Johnson is the only college basketball player in the last 20 years to have 1,400 points, 800
rebounds, 300 offensive rebounds and 200 three-pointers while shooting at least 80% from the line.
• Johnson will be playing in his 137th career game, tying him for the most in UD Basketball history.
• The Flyers are 18-2 the past two seasons when Josh Parker scores in double figures.
• Dayton is 10-3 this season when Paul Williams scores in double figures. He is averaging 11.7 points per game in his last six contests.
• Kevin Dillard ranks second in the A-10 and 18th in the NCAA in assists per game with 6.0. Dillard is also second in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.1).
• Dillard leads the Flyers in scoring (12.9) assists per game (6.0), steals (42) and minutes (32.4). He has scored in double figures in 12 of his last 13 games.
• With 186 assists, Dillard has the 4th-most in a single-season at UD. Next is Juwan Staten with 190.
• In five games as a starter, Devin Oliver averages 10.4 points and 8.0 rebounds. He had a careerhigh 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting versus George Washington in the A-10 First Round.
• Matt Kavanaugh ranks third in the A-10 in offensive rebounding (3.1 rpg) and seventh in field goal percentage (.554). The 96 offensive rebounds are the fifth-most in a single season at UD.
