DAYTON, Ohio —

With four of their top hitters getting a much-needed day of rest, the Dayton Dragons struggled to generate any offense on Friday night.

The Dragons fell to the West Michigan Whitecaps 5-0.

The playoff-bound Dragons fell to 37-30 in the second half one day after clinching a post-season berth.

Brandon Waring, Zack Cozart, Denis Phipps, and Devin Mesoraco were out of the lineup.

The Dragons collected just four hits as West Michigan starting pitcher Thad Weber (1-4) earned his first win of the season. Weber tossed seven and two-thirds innings, allowing four hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

West Michigan took the lead in the third inning against Dragons starting pitcher Curtis Partch (5-11).

Angel Flores started the rally with a single to right and Jordan Newton followed with a double to left. Joe Tucker singled to center to bring in both Flores and Newton to make it 2-0.

In the sixth, the Whitecaps scored three times to extend their lead to 5-0. Partch was charged with all three runs in the inning, although reliever Daniel Guerrero surrendered a two-run double to Kody Kaiser after coming into the game with the bases load.

Partch worked five and one-third innings, allowing six hits and five earned runs with two walks and four strikeouts.

Justin Reed went two for three with a walk as the only Dragons’ hitter with more than one hit.

The Dragons will host West Michigan again Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Juan Rafael (3-2, 4.62) will start for Dayton.

The Dragons begin the Midwest League playoffs on Wednesday at Fifth Third Field against the Lansing Lugnuts at 7:00 p.m. For tickets, call (937) 228-2287.
