COLUMBUS, Ohio —
Andre Yates dribbled the length of the court and hit a banker over three defenders for the winning basket with 3.2 seconds left as Dunbar defeated Elida 54-52 on Saturday to win the boys Division II state high school basketball championship.
The heavily favored Wolverines (28-0) completed the only unbeaten season in the storied program’s history against Elida (24-4). It was the third of four state title games on Saturday at Ohio State University’s Schottenstein Center.
The Wolverines trailed most of the first half, but went on a 16-0 run to end the third quarter and pushed that to 20-0 early in the fourth to take control.
It was a great effort by Elida to neutralize Dunbar’s superior length and up tempo game in the first half. Senior Reggie McAdams tallied 13 points, including 11 in the first quarter when he also drew two personal fouls on Andre Yates that relegated him to the bench for the entire second quarter.
The athletic McAdams, 6-6, is headed to Akron to play basketball. He’s also the Bulldogs’ quarterback and has placed fifth in the high jump at the state track and field meet.
Yates paced the Wolverines with eight points, all in the first quarter.
Dunbar advanced by grinding down Mentor Lake Catholic 75-60 in Friday’s D-II state semifinals. Elida crushed St. Clairsville 61-27 in its state semifinal.
Dayton Public Schools has planned a parade from the Drew Health Center (1323 West Third Street) to the high school for Sunday afternoon. The parade begins at 1:30 p.m.
Two state titles already have been decided today. Berlin Hiland successfully defended its D-IV championship by blitzing Jackson Center 68-36 in the D-IV opener. That was Jackson Center’s (27-1) only setback this season. Hiland ended 27-1.
Cincinnati Summit Country Day defeated Portsmouth 53-37 to capture the D-III title. It was the first state title for the Golden Knights (26-1), who were making their first final four appearance since 1980.
Toledo Whitmer (24-2) and Pickerington Central (25-2) will each be looking for their first state titles in the D-I final at 8:30 p.m.
