DAYTON —

Former Cubs and Angels infielder Jose Nieves, a native of Venezuela, will manage the Dayton Dragons in 2013, the club announced Wednesday, and Tony Fossas returns to the Dragons as pitching coach after spending the 2009-11 seasons in the same position.

Nieves spent the last two seasons managing the Reds’ Arizona League club. He came to the Reds in 2010 as manager of their Venezuelan Summer League team.

Nieves, 37, played parts of five seasons in the majors. He was with the Cubs from 1998-2000 and played for the Angels in 2001 and 2002. He played in 45 games for the 2002 Angels team that won the World Series.

Nieves also played parts of 13 seasons in the minors (1995-2008). He played in the Midwest League in 1996 with the Rockford Cubbies.

Fossas was the pitching coach at Billings in 2012. HIs staff finished second in the Pioneer League in team ERA. In 2011, his Dragons staff set a Midwest League record for strikeouts and set a team record for ERA.

Delino DeShields, the Dragons manager in 2012, will take manage the Double-A Pensacola Blue Wahoos this season.

The Dragons’ other coaches in 2012, hitting coach Alex Pelaez and pitching coach Tom Browning, will return to the Reds organization with other affiliates, but their exact destinations haven’t been named yet.

The Reds also announced that Tyler Steele will return to the Dragons for his fifth season as athletic trainer.
