Storm Clean Up Underway

DAYTON, Ohio —

A lightning bolt from an overnight storm hit a house, sparking a fire that caused major damage to the home.

At about 4:50a.m. in the 5800 block of North Dayton-Lakeview Road, a 17-year-old boy sleeping on a couch heard a loud clap of lightning directly over him. He ran outside to see what happened and saw his house on fire.

The boy called the called the fire department, and crews extinguished the flames in about 15 minutes.

The house sustained extensive structural damage. The roof must be removed and replaced, the first floor ceiling was destroyed and water damage soaked the interior.

The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch Friday until 9 p.m. for the entire Miami Valley, and the storms were a headache to thousands, but only a minor inconvenience to some.

BEAVERCREEK: Showers Soak Miami Valley

More than 4,000 Dayton Power and Light Customers lost power after a round of severe thunderstorms moved through the Miami Valley Friday evening.

DP&L crews have been able to restore power to nearly all customers who were affected.

Some people actually welcomed the showers.

"A month ago we didn't need none of it," Steve Short of Xenia said. "Now, we need a little bit more [rain]."

On Friday morning, a series of severe storms moved through the area bringing heavy rain, dangerous lightning and some hail.

The storms hit around 4 a.m. and continued to move eastward into the Dayton-metro area. In the northern part of the region, the storms continued for more than an hour in Greenville.

Officials with Dayton Power and Light said they had more than 2,000 customers who lost power during the early storm.

Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek said their will be some more storms throughout the evening, some with possible damaging winds and hail.

He said the storms will die down overnight, but he cannot rule out a scattered shower. On Saturday, Wirdzek said a mix of sun and clouds will give way to some scattered storms, once again, possibly severe. Highs Saturday in the mid 8s.
