Local Hotel Closes Leaving Employees Without Jobs

Tuesday, April 29, 2008 – updated: 3:09 pm EDT April 29, 2008

After more than 50 years in business, the Dayton Executive Hotel announced Tuesday that it is closing its doors.

On Tuesday morning, the 10 or so employees were told that they would be out of a job at 5 p.m.

Doug Brown, former hotel employee said they had to get out by 5 p.m. He said they got the word around 7 a.m. that the doors would be permanently shut by the end of the day.

Employees said the hotel has 231 rooms, but it was only about 10 percent booked. They said mostly construction workers were their guests at the present time.

Terry Akers is a Kokosing employee who has been working on the I-75 construction project. He has been working on the project for about two years and has been living at the Dayton Executive Hotel for that long.

Akers said he has seen the downward progression of the hotel over the past few years.

At this time, it is not officially known why the hotel is closing. One employee said it is because of bad business.

The property was supposed to be auctioned off two weeks ago, but the auction company told News Center 7 that the seller stopped it before-hand, and now it is going through private negotiations.

News Center 7’s Danielle Elias called the parent company who owns the hotel. They have yet to return the call.
