Tuesday, April 29, 2008 – updated: 5:17 pm EDT April 29, 2008

Police in Springfield said a man is behind bars accused of breaking into or trying to break into five different businesses early Sunday morning.

Seth Adkins, 36, is also accused of another break-in, which was caught on tape.

On April 20, surveillance cameras recorded images of someone breaking into the BP gas station on East Main Street in Springfield. The video show a man going through the cash register.

Sgt. Brain Peabody said the man took about $500 in cash and about $100 in cigarettes.

Police said one week later, the same man broke into or tried to break into five other businesses on the city’s east side, including the East Main Street Express.

Investigators said about 15 minutes later outside the Peanut Shop on East Main Street, the same man tries to kick in a door, but again is unsuccessful.

However, police said the man managed to get inside at least three other businesses.

Peabody said, "While checking the area came across a subject who was out at 4:30 in the morning so at that time the officers initiated a stop, made contact. Things were a little suspicious and they brought him to police headquarters."

Adkins was charged with three counts of breaking and entering and three counts of vandalism. He pleaded not guilty in court to all charges.

Adkins is in jail on a $15,000 bond.
