Dayton Man Gets 12 Years In Child’s Death

POSTED: 2:06 pm EDT May 15, 2008

A Dayton man was sentenced Thursday for his role in the death of 3-year-old Ka’Ron Dugger.

Leon Miller was sentenced on two counts of child endangering and for involuntary manslaughter.

Miller was found guilty of inflicting the blunt force trauma that killed Dugger, hitting him at least two times in the chest when he was left alone to watch the little boy.

The child’s mother said she could not find the words for what she has been through. Kia Richardson said, “I can’t find one word to describe it. If I acted like everything was fine and peachy, it hasn’t.”

Before judge Dennis Langer handed down Miller’s sentenced, he told him that despite letters written on his behalf, he could not overlook the fact that he took almost the entire life of a child that barely lived.

Miller stood mostly silent, saying only that he never meant for this to happen and said that he was truly sorry.

The judge sentenced Miller to 10 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and two year concurrent sentences for child endangering, putting him behind bars for 12 years in all.

Dugger’s biological father not only addressed the court, but he also made his feeling known after court let out.

Aaron Dugger said, “I don’t think that’s a sincere apology. The only real apology would be not to do it in the first place.”

Prosecutors said despite the fact that the sentence was pretty much agreed upon by themselves and defense attorneys, there is no true justice in a case like this. A 3-year-old child never got to live his life and dozens of other lives will never be the same.

Miller will get credit for time served. He has been in jail for over a year already while his case went through the system.

The judge said that Miller will not be a candidate for early release.
