Passage Of Levy Looks Favorable For DPS

Tuesday, November 4, 2008 – updated: 10:51 am EST November 5, 2008

Dayton Public Schools had an operating levy on Tuesday’s ballot. The levy, also known as Issue 52, is slated to give $9 million to the district each year.

Even though the numbers are still being counted, it looks like the majority of the voters are willing to spend the extra money.

Stella Johnson said she voted in favor of the levy.

Voters said they do not want to pay more, but they said they are willing to if it means better funding for local education.

Johnson said, “When I was growing up, we always had music, art, extra activities and nowadays you don’t get it.”

Kenyatta Booker said, “I think all kids need computers. I’d like to see more money in the urban areas.”

While many voters were in favor of the 4.9 mill levy, many other voters cast their ballots against the levy.

Dayton Schools’ superintendent Kurt Stanic said, “People are hurting, however, education is the only way to change your lifestyle and if we expect to change the demographic of the Dayton region, it has to be through education.”

The passage of the levy will mean smaller class sizes and more activities. If the levy would be defeated, classes would be larger, there would be fewer activities and layoffs.

With the pending approval of the levy, Dayton leaders said their new direction for today will be to plan out where the funding will go.

They said their next big project will focus on academic achievement.
