The rumors continue to swirl around retired quarterback Brett Favre.

With the Green Bay Packers training camp opening at the end of July, speculation is growing over whether or not Favre -- who announced his retirement in March -- will opt to come back. And if he does come back, which team will he play for.

On Monday, SI.com's Peter King wrote that Favre told Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy that he wants to return. King also said he expects Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook, to send a letter to the Packers within the next 10 days stating that the former quarterback wants to be taken off the NFL's reserved/retired list.

If Favre is removed from the list, the Packers will have some decisions to make. According to King, Green Bay will either be able to put Favre back on their roster and welcome him back as the team's quarterback, or they could opt to trade or release the future Hall of Famer.

According to King, McCarthy allegedly told Favre in a phone conversation a couple of weeks ago that the quarterback would put the team in a tough position by coming out of retirement.

King wasn't the only one adding fuel to the Favre comeback rumors Monday.

A Milwaukee television station reported that Favre sent a text message to Packers general manager Ted Thompson on Saturday. Thompson reportedly replied that he was on vacation and they would have to talk later.

Last week, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that according to a source, Favre told McCarthy that he wanted to return to the league, but that talks hadn't graduated to a substantive stage.

The source also told Mortensen that Green Bay would be uneasy welcoming Favre back because, "Brett retired for the right reasons, even though I know his family is tugging on him [to play]."

Favre's old teammates have also added to the speculation. On "NFL Live" last week, Packers defensive back Al Harris said Favre had "the itch to come back."

Favre later dismissed the ESPN reports, telling the Sun Herald of Biloxi, Miss., that "it's all rumor" and that there was "no reason" for a media frenzy.

Favre has two years left on his contract with Green Bay.

The Mississippi native left the NFL as the league's all-time record holder in several categories, including wins by a starting quarterback, passing yards, touchdowns and consecutive games started.

A three-time NFL MVP, seven-time All-Pro and nine-time Pro Bowl selection, Favre completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 61,655 yards and 442 TDs over 17 NFL seasons, the last 16 of which were played in Green Bay after the Packers acquired him from the Atlanta Falcons.
