Armstrong Takes Tour Lead; Zabriskie Crashes

Tuesday, July 5, 2005 – updated: 1:11 pm EDT July 5, 2005

The Discovery Channel team, led by six-time defending champion Lance Armstrong, won the 41.9-mile team trial from Tours to Blois during the fourth stage of the 2005 Tour de France on Tuesday.

Armstrong claimed the overall leader's yellow jersey by virtue of his team's record-breaking time of 1:10.39. It is the 67th yellow jersey of his illustrious career.

Armstrong currently holds a 55-second lead over teammate George Hincapie in the overall standings.

Team CSC finished second in the time trial, just two seconds behind Discovery Channel.

CSC's David Zabriskie was the overall leader coming into Tuesday's stage, but didn't fare well in the time trial. Zabriskie took a dramatic fall within sight of the finish line and was penalized with a slower time than the rest of his team. The American has now dropped all the way to ninth place in the general classification.

CSC still has the third and fourth riders in the overall standings in Jens Voigt and Bobby Julich. Voigt currently trails Armstrong by one minute and four seconds and Julich is just three seconds behind Voigt.

Coming in third place was the T-Mobile team, which finished 36 seconds behind Discovery Channel. T-Mobile is anchored by 1997 Tour de France winner and five-time runner-up Jan Ullrich.

This year's Tour de France is expected to be the last for Armstrong, the only six-time winner of this event. The Texan will try to further extend his lead in Wednesday's fifth stage, a 113-mile trek from Chambord to Montargis.
