Vinokourov Wins 11th Stage As Armstrong Keeps Yellow

Wednesday, July 13, 2005 – updated: 12:51 pm EDT July 13, 2005

Kazakhsthan's Alexandre Vinokourov won the 11th stage of the Tour de France while six-time defending champion American Lance Armstrong kept his grasp on the yellow jersey after Wednesday's run.

Vinokourov outsprinted Colombian Santiago Botero over the final kilometer to capture the 108-mile mostly-uphill trek from Courchevel to Briancon, one of the most grueling stages of the Tour. Both riders covered the distance in 4:47.38.

Armstrong, who re-took the overall lead with a strong performance in Stage 10, finished sixth on Wednesday, 1.14 seconds behind Vinokourov and Botero. He still holds a 38-second overall advantage over Denmark's Michael Rasmussen, who was also in the second pack and wound up ninth in an identical time.

Frenchman Christophe Moreau placed third and moved past Italy's Ivan Basso for third overall, 2.34 seconds behind Armstrong and six in front of Basso. Stage 10 victor Alejandro Valverde stands in fifth place and is 3.16 seconds behind.

Bobby Julich of the United States and Italian Eddy Mazzoleni ended fourth and fifth, respectively, at the conclusion of Wednesday's stage.
