'Wii' Will Rock You, Nintendo Hopes

Posted: 4:20 pm EDT April 27, 2006

Nintendo on Thursday announced the official name of its next-generation gaming console, previously known as the Revolution.

The platform will be called Wii.

That's pronounced "we."

A Nintendo news release said that the idea is that "Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everyone else."

It also said that the two i's in the name partially represent the unique controller the system will use. Rather than the now-familiar two-handed game pad, the device will use a motion-sensing bar with few buttons that is meant to be held in one hand.

Accessories will extend the capabilities of the controller.

The platform will compete with the currently available Xbox 360 from Microsoft and Sony's Playstation 3, expected later this year.
