Phoenix Monsoon Leaves Damaging Imprint
Stormy Day Marked By Rescue, Roof Collapse

PHOENIX -- Monsoon-driven rains that lashed the Phoenix area Wednesday afternoon sparked a high-water rescue, a partial roof collapse at a Safeway store and a rollover accident on Interstate 17 involving nine people.A 12-year-old girl and her dog, Daisy, were swept half a mile down a flooded drainage ditch in the West Valley during the height of the pounding thunderstorms.Jesse Yosua said she and her dog slipped and fell into a ditch as heavy rain quickly saturated the ground. (Click here for the full story.)Elsewhere in the area, firefighters said it took about 20 minutes to evacuate a Safeway store in Phoenix after a section of the rain-soaked roof caved in, startling at least 50 workers and shoppers inside.Firefighters rushed inside to check to see if anyone was trapped under the debris. Everyone fled safely and there were no injuries, fire officials said.Crews were working to determine just how much damage was done and how long repairs would take.Strong downpours drilled the Greater Phoenix area Wednesday afternoon after striking other locations in the county with flash flooding.Several streets were flooded. If flash flooding is observed, act quickly. Do not stay in areas subject to flooding when water begins to rise, especially normally dry washes. Be cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of floods and flash floods. It is very difficult at night to tell how much water is on roads. Motorists should not drive through water of unknown depth. Do not drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely and the road beneath may not be intact. Vehicles caught in rising water should be abandoned quickly. It only takes a foot or two of flowing water to wash most cars away. Most deaths in flash flooding occur in automobiles. Do not attempt to cross bridges, dips or low water crossings if water covers the roadway. Never try to cross a flowing wash, even a small one, on foot. Do not drive around barricades. If your vehicle stalls, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground. During heavy rains, keep children away from storm drains, water catchments and washes. Shallow, gently flowing water can become a raging torrent in a matter of minutes. A sudden downpour may cut visibility to near zero. Wind-driven rain may hamper both driver and pedestrian. When faced with such weather conditions, be especially cautious and proceed slowly within your range of sight. Hikers and campers should immediately climb to higher ground when a warning is issued for the area or when flooding is observed.
9 People Involved In Storm-Driven Crash
Severe wind and rain contributed to a rollover crash on Interstate 17.The vehicle, a standard size pickup, was northbound when the driver lost control of the truck and traveled off the roadway and rolled over, the Department of Public Safety said.Several of the nine passengers aboard the vehicle were ejected, the DPS said. The injuries ranged from serious to critical. All of the injured were transported by ground ambulances to Phoenix area hospitals. Medical rescue helicopters were not able to respond due to the severe weather.Phoenix TV station KPHO reported that an inch and a half of rain fell in the Goodyear and Avondale areas. Strong thunderstorm cells developed rapidly over metropolitan Phoenix, dropping 1.12 inches of rain. There were reports of three-quarters of an inch of rain falling in 15 minutes in Wickenburg, where flooding and road closures were reported.Wickenburg ended up with 1.92 inches of rain.In Tonopah, 2.40 inches of rain fell in slightly more than one hour, meteorologists said. The region was under a flash flood warning as the storms blew through.2 Dead In Rain-Swollen Wash
Two men were killed after their pickup was swept away in a flooded wash in Golden Valley. The Mohave County Sheriff's Office said witnesses reported the pickup rolled several times after entering a rain-swollen wash near Highway 68 on Tuesday night.Witnesses said both men managed to get out of the vehicle while it continued to be pushed downstream, but were swept away. The sheriff's office said the body of one man was recovered about an hour later. A search continued through the night for the second victim and his body was found Wednesday morning.Names of the victims weren't immediately released. The sheriff's office said occupants of two other vehicles stranded in flooded washes Tuesday night in Golden Valley were rescued.More Wet Weather Dominates Forecast
Showers and thunderstorms will remain in the forecast for the next several days as low and mid-level moisture, surface heating and transient upper level impulses provide the right ingredients to trigger daily activity, National Weather Service meteorologists said.Thunderstorms that do develop are likely to be slow movers, increasing the likelihood of heavy rainfall and localized flooding.Areas where storm probability are the greatest include the higher terrain of southern Gila and northern Maricopa counties, meteorologists said.Increased chances for showers and thunderstorms will continue through the remainder of the week and into the weekend as very moist air remains over the region.Flood Safety Tips
