Heat Wave Hitting The Miami Valley

Thursday, July 17, 2008 – updated: 10:02 pm EDT July 17, 2008

It's going to be 90's degrees Thursday and News Center 7 meteorologist Rich Wirdzek said this is the beginning of our first heat wave since last September.

While it can be fun in the sun, experts said high heat and humidity can be dangerous for senior citizens.

Doctors said if senior citizens must be out outside during the heat wave, they should drink plenty of water and take lots of breaks and go inside where it is cool.

The heat turned a Dayton man's morning walk into a trip to the hospital Thursday. He was overcome by heat and passed out at the intersection at Patterson and Hampshire Roads.

John Brinkman, Director of Nursing at Bethany Lutheran Village, said he is responsible for about 700 seniors at that facility. Brinkman said, "It's not just the heat, it's the humidity. If you're going to go out do it for short periods of time."

Brinkman also said these warnings are especially important because today's senior citizens are much more active.
