Miami Township Tree limb Pick-up
Miami Township continues its efforts to recover from the wind storm of last week.The Miami Township Public Works Department has initiated the process of collecting downed tree limbs that is expected to take 4 to 6 weeks to complete. Crews are working in several subdivisions and will be providing aid to residents by picking up tree limbs only.Please cut limbs in manageable lengths and place near road edge, not in the roadway. Crews will not be working out of the legal road right-of-way under any circumstances. Crews will not be collecting logs, larger limbs, bagged or bundled items, chipped piles or small piles of raked sticks (most notably raked piles containing sticks and leaves).Please dispose of these items through your refuse provider or contract with a reputable tree removal service.12pm, Thursday
Moraine Block Party
The city of Moraine and Chick-Fil-A will be hosting a Black Out Block Party serving 200 meals to residents of Moraine who remain without power. Dayton Power and Light continues to make progress in restoring power to the region. At this time, they said 2,800 customers remain without power. They said power should be retored to most customers on Thursday, however, some invdividual customers may have to wait a little longer. 11:47pm, Wednesday
Only a few thousand people in our area are still without power Wednesday night. Dayton Power and Light are reporting 4300 customers are without power.Duke Energy in Cincinnati said 75 customers are without power, but that number continues to go up and down on Wednesday.10:55am, Wednesday
Food Stamp Deadline
People looking to apply for replacement food stamps to cover spoiled food in Montgomery County have until the end of the day to apply. So far, officials said more than 19,000 people have applied. To qualify, you must have received food stamps during the month of September.Wednesday is the last day to file an application. The American Red Cross will be discontinuing its overnight shelter at the Crossroads Church of God on Miller Lane beginning at noon. City Of Dayton
The city of Dayton is relaxing normal guidelines for hauling away debris in the wake of the Sept. 14 wind storm. Normally, residents must cut, bundle and tie their debris into piles no longer than 4 feet by 4 feet.However, due to the volume of debris, residents do not have to bundle their debris and the size of the piles can be 6 feet by 6 feet. Until power is restored to all areas, the Golf Club at Yankee Trace, 10000 Yankee St., will have shower facilities available 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. The Centerville Police Department will continue additional night-time patrol in those areas without power as well. Montgomery County is waiving fees for permits for repairs related to the wind storm Sept. 14, 2008. Re-roofing does not require a permit unless structural repairs to sheathing, framing or trusses are done. Reconnecting electrical service equipment that pulled loose from a building does not require a permit. Fees for permits for Ike wind storm damage repairs will also be waived.4:15pm, Monday

Greene County Environmental Services has extended the hours of its central yard waste site. Power restoration efforts continue across the Miami Valley. A spokesman for DP and L said 1500 linemen from 10 different states are in the area working to restore power as quickly as possible. Over 20,000 cubic yards have been dropped off so far this week.We are currently stockpiling the debris and will work on grinding and disposing of it after we can assess the amount of material we have.The County does not have the facilities to accept building debris, such as shingles, bricks and fencing. Anything that has been part of or attached to a structure can be taken to a construction demolition site, such as Xenia Demolition Landfill on Dayton-Xenia Road.Many of the local communities are picking up yard debris from residents. The Greene County Health Department is warning residents NOT to throw away spoiled meat and food in their home trash can. The rotting food presents a health hazard and can attract rats. Firefighters at Fire Station No. 14, which is located at North Main Street and Fairview Avenue have been answering triple the calls. They have also been without power. The fire station just had power restored early Thursday morning.Fire officials said they have a generator at the station that is strong enough to keep their communication system up. In the City of Kettering starting Monday, September 22, the city will begin collecting storm debris from the curb. Place debris just inside the curb, not in the street. To help ensure efficient storm cleanup, have debris moved to the curb prior to Monday, September 22. Residents with debris related issues may call the street department at 296-2472.For residents in the city of Xenia they can take debris to the Greene County Recycling Center on Greene Way Blvd. off Progress Drive.Residents in Centerville are encouraged to continue to tie-up small branches and yard debris into bundles less than 4 feet in length and less than 40lbs to be removed with their regular weekly refuse service.This is free, emergency-related service that is being offered for storm-related debris only. If you have questions or need additional information contact the Centerville Municipal Building at 433-7151.Residents in Clark County can take their debris to the city of Springfield at Lagonda and Belmonte at the old International Plant.For at least the next week, Public Works crews will be collecting any downed branches set out at the curb in Miamisburg. Officials with the Red Cross said they will then decide whether to continue to stay open and for how long. Red Cross Opening Shelters
The Red Cross has opened a number of emergency shelters for people who need assistance. In Dayton, a shelter has been established at the Dayton Masonic Temple on West Riverview Ave. It is located right next to the Dayton Art Institute. A shelter is located at Xenia Central Junior High School on Edison Boulevard in Xenia. Residents who have structural damage to their home are asked to call the Clark County Emergency Operations Center at 521-2175. If you are asked to leave a message please include your address and what damage has occurred to your home. If your in need of water for personal and sanitary use and your current township is without electricity you may take empty jugs or appropriate containers to your local fire station between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Dayton - Oxygen Supplies
The Red Cross emergency shelter established at the Masonic Temple of Dayton is now equipped to provide oxygen and electrical power to people in need of assistance with their oxygen equipment. The oxygen station and electricity has been provided to citizens in addition to basic necessities, such as food and water. The emergency shelter is located at 525 W. Riverview Ave. in Dayton. “Hospitals need to ensure that their emergency rooms have the capacity to address the life-threatening issues that they are presented with each day. Individuals that are not facing a life-threatening emergency should contact their primary care provider first and follow their instructions,” stated Bryan Bucklew, President & CEO of the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association. Bucklew said, “If you are someone without any acute or life-threatening medical emergencies and are simply in need of oxygen or available electricity to recharge your oxygen equipment, go to the Red Cross emergency shelter to receive oxygen or to use the available electricity to charge your oxygen equipment.”By offsetting the increased number of patients requesting oxygen treatment at the region’s emergency departments with the emergency shelter, the region’s hospitals will be able to devote the necessary resources to addressing emergency situations.5:31pm, Monday

According to the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association, local hospitals in the region have reached critical capacity and are requesting that citizens do not use local emergency rooms for anything other than acute or life-threatening issues. A Red Cross emergency shelter has been established at the Masonic Temple of Dayton for citizens in need of basic necessities, including food and water. In an effort to offset the current demand for oxygen at local hospitals, an oxygen station is being set up and equipped to assist patients in need of oxygen at the Red Cross emergency shelter. The emergency shelter is located at 525 W. Riverview Ave. in Dayton.According to GDAHA President & CEO, Bryan Bucklew, individuals in need of medication or medical care that is not acute or life-threatening should contact their primary care physician first. Bucklew stated that “Several of the region’s hospitals have seen such an urgent increase in emergency room visits that they are currently at critical capacity.”By offsetting the increased number of patients requesting oxygen treatment at the region’s emergency departments with the emergency shelter, the region’s hospitals will be able to devote the necessary resources to addressing emergency situations.3:41pm, Monday

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland says about 2 million customers in the state are without power in the wake of high winds from the remnants of Hurricane Ike. Strickland also has declared a state of emergency, which will allow the Ohio Department of Transportation to help local communities remove debris from roads. 84 of the state's 88 counties received damage. At least four people were killed when hit by toppled trees or falling branches. A fifth person was electrocuted working on a generator Monday. The City of Trotwood will remove tree limbs throughout the city, but all limbs must be 4" in diameter or smaller. News Center 7 has been on the phone with Marathon/Speedway officials trying to assess the gasoline situation. A spokesperson says 316 Speedway stations were without power in the Ohio-Kentucky area shortly after the storm moved through. As of mid-day today that number was down to 140. Dayton and Montgomery County have issued the following Food Safety Advisory for all consumers, restaurants, grocery stores, and any food operations affected by the recent power outages. If the power has been out for longer than 2 hours follow these guidelines:-For Refrigerators: Perishables such as milk, diary, meat, fish, and eggs, can be packed on ice in a cooler. Commercial operations may transfer foods to another location with power or rent a refrigerated storage truck.- For Freezers: A freezer that is full will normally keep food for 48 hours, a half-full freezer will keep food for 24 hours. Do not open the freezer door if you can avoid it. When power is restored, if the food temperature is 40F or lower, it may safely be refrozen.- Use a metal stem probe thermometer to check food product temperatures; discard any perishable food that has a temperature of more than 40F. If you have doubts about the safety of the food, throw it out.

The University of Dayton was open on Monday and classes were in session, although an estimated 2,400 students were without power, according to Beth Keyes, assistant vice president of facilities management. The storm knocked out power to the north and south student neighborhoods except for portions of Stonemill Road and Frericks Way, she said. However, residence halls, classroom buildings and other campus facilities were open and operational. According to Keyes, University grounds crews and tree-trimming contractors began working at 2 p.m. on Sunday to clear downed trees and branches. Many trees, including some very large ones were damaged.The RecPlex was opened Sunday night for students, but only a few spent the night there. A handful of students from the student neighborhoods spent the night in University guest houses after their houses were damaged. Roofing contractors were contacted on Sunday, and were busy on Monday repairing damage to roofs on residences and campus buildings, she said. Red Cross Opening Shelters
The Red Cross has opened a number of emergency shelters for people who need assistance. In Dayton, a shelter has been established at the Dayton Masonic Temple on West Riverview Ave. It is located right next to the Dayton Art Institute. A shelter is located at Xenia Central Junior High School on Edison Boulevard in Xenia. Dayton - Oxygen Supplies
The Red Cross emergency shelter established at the Masonic Temple of Dayton is now equipped to provide oxygen and electrical power to people in need of assistance with their oxygen equipment. The oxygen station and electricity has been provided to citizens in addition to basic necessities, such as food and water. The emergency shelter is located at 525 W. Riverview Ave. in Dayton. “Hospitals need to ensure that their emergency rooms have the capacity to address the life-threatening issues that they are presented with each day. Individuals that are not facing a life-threatening emergency should contact their primary care provider first and follow their instructions,” stated Bryan Bucklew, President & CEO of the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association. Bucklew said, “If you are someone without any acute or life-threatening medical emergencies and are simply in need of oxygen or available electricity to recharge your oxygen equipment, go to the Red Cross emergency shelter to receive oxygen or to use the available electricity to charge your oxygen equipment.”By offsetting the increased number of patients requesting oxygen treatment at the region’s emergency departments with the emergency shelter, the region’s hospitals will be able to devote the necessary resources to addressing emergency situations.5:31pm, Monday

According to the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association, local hospitals in the region have reached critical capacity and are requesting that citizens do not use local emergency rooms for anything other than acute or life-threatening issues. A Red Cross emergency shelter has been established at the Masonic Temple of Dayton for citizens in need of basic necessities, including food and water. In an effort to offset the current demand for oxygen at local hospitals, an oxygen station is being set up and equipped to assist patients in need of oxygen at the Red Cross emergency shelter. The emergency shelter is located at 525 W. Riverview Ave. in Dayton.According to GDAHA President & CEO, Bryan Bucklew, individuals in need of medication or medical care that is not acute or life-threatening should contact their primary care physician first. Ohio - State of Emergency
Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland says about 2 million customers in the state are without power in the wake of high winds from the remnants of Hurricane Ike. Strickland also has declared a state of emergency, which will allow the Ohio Department of Transportation to help local communities remove debris from roads. 84 of the state's 88 counties received damage. At least four people were killed when hit by toppled trees or falling branches. A fifth person was electrocuted working on a generator Monday. Miami Township - General Announcement
Miami Township essential services and administrative services are open. Currently, all emergency lines and non emergency phone lines are operational. Over the next several days Miami Township Road Crews will be removing downed trees and tree limbs from the road right of way. For downed trees or tree limbs in your yard our crews will remove these items under the following circumstances. The material must be brought to the edge of the roadway and the material must be cut in small manageable pieces. Currently, four Miami Township Parks are closed, including Layer Park, Crains Run Park, Omietanski Park and Walhdrue Park. There are also numerous traffic signals throughout Miami Township that are not operational. Intersections with non-functioning traffic signals are to be treated as four-way stops. The City of Trotwood will remove tree limbs throughout the city, but all limbs must be 4" in diameter or smaller. Limbs should be stacked at the edge of the road or curb line, without obstructing road traffic, and should not be tied together or bagged. Trotwood will begin this service in the next several days, after all city roads have been cleared of any obstructions from fallen trees and debris. Miami Valley - Gasoline Concerns
News Center 7 has been on the phone with Marathon/Speedway officials trying to assess the gasoline situation. A spokesperson says 316 Speedway stations were without power in the Ohio-Kentucky area shortly after the storm moved through. As of mid-day today that number was down to 140. Speedway urges everyone to continue with their normal buying habits, and to reduce consumption where possible. The company believes that any gas disruption will be minimal.2:52pm, Monday

Health Warning
Dayton and Montgomery County have issued the following Food Safety Advisory for all consumers, restaurants, grocery stores, and any food operations affected by the recent power outages. If the power has been out for longer than 2 hours follow these guidelines:-For Refrigerators: Perishables such as milk, diary, meat, fish, and eggs, can be packed on ice in a cooler. Commercial operations may transfer foods to another location with power or rent a refrigerated storage truck.- For Freezers: A freezer that is full will normally keep food for 48 hours, a half-full freezer will keep food for 24 hours. Do not open the freezer door if you can avoid it. When power is restored, if the food temperature is 40F or lower, it may safely be refrozen.- Use a metal stem probe thermometer to check food product temperatures; discard any perishable food that has a temperature of more than 40F. If you have doubts about the safety of the food, throw it out.

University of Dayton
The University of Dayton was open on Monday and classes were in session, although an estimated 2,400 students were without power, according to Beth Keyes, assistant vice president of facilities management. The storm knocked out power to the north and south student neighborhoods except for portions of Stonemill Road and Frericks Way, she said. However, residence halls, classroom buildings and other campus facilities were open and operational. According to Keyes, University grounds crews and tree-trimming contractors began working at 2 p.m. on Sunday to clear downed trees and branches. Many trees, including some very large ones were damaged.The RecPlex was opened Sunday night for students, but only a few spent the night there. A handful of students from the student neighborhoods spent the night in University guest houses after their houses were damaged. Roofing contractors were contacted on Sunday, and were busy on Monday repairing damage to roofs on residences and campus buildings, she said.
