MIAMI VALLEY, Ohio -- A week of gray, gloomy weather ended Thursday night with strong winds, hail and even a funnel cloud. The wild weather stormed through all parts of the Miami Valley on Thursday, brought down power poles, trees, branches and even formed a funnel cloud in Shelby County. Two people in Shelby County reported seeing a funnel cloud. One man who lives in the area, Mark Counts, decided to get a closer look and chased after the storm. He captured the funnel cloud that never touched the ground on his home video.Counts said he is glad that no one got hurt, but said he got a thrill out of being able to capture the funnel cloud on home video.Less than five miles away in McCartyville, Keith Pettit kept his eye on the sky. He said, “It was pretty exciting watching the rotation on the bottom of the funnel cloud."The National Weather Service said what was spinning over Shelby County was called a cold air funnel, which is similar to a tornado, but is different.StormCenter 7 meteorologist Jamie Simpson explained the difference. He said, “The cold air above mixes with the warm air that is rising from below and starts to stretch, much like a figure skater. They almost never make it to the ground.”As Counts was pursuing the cold air funnel, he ran into a hail storm that dumped enough hail to cover the ground. In Franklin, in Warren County, Thursday’s storms knocked down trees and tossed them onto homes, including one on Lake Street. In Eaton, a large tree branch came down and landed on the roof of an apartment
