Independence For Kosovo and the Wisconsin Primary

Previous Posts

I tried to take a blackberry break this weekend, so I didn't look at my email until a quick glance around lunchtime on Sunday.  "Statement by Barack Obama on the Independence of Kosovo," caught my eye.

I didn't even need to see the story that Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia, to remember why the Serb angle seemed familiar in Wisconsin.

It was 1972 in the Democratic Primary, when George Wallace packed places with names like "Serb Hall" in Milwaukee, as he finished second to George McGovern that year.

As the serbhall.com website says, " Many, many important rallies have been held at Serb Hall," listing names from JFK to Ronald Reagan, McGovern to George Bush and more, like Jerry Kleczka.  (You get extra points if you know who Kleczka is without looking him up on the internet.)

"
I want to stress the high importance that I attach to full protection of the rights of all minorities in Kosova, especially the Serbs, and to safeguard Serbian cultural and religious heritage sites in Kosova.," said Hillary Clinton in a statement sent out by her campaign.

"Serbia and its people have also suffered terribly over the past two decades. Serbs deserve a more peaceful, prosperous, and hopeful future," added Obama in his own statement.

Sometimes a campaign is about more than just "local" issues.
