As I was walking into the US Capitol on Wednesday, I ran into a GOP Senator and our five minute chit-chat exposed some of the electoral worries amongst Republicans right now, especially if the November election is between Barack Obama and John McCain.
While convinced that McCain is a solid candidate for the Republican party, this Senator was like many, amazed at the crowds that Obama continues to draw on the campaign trail.
I ran my theory by this Senator that Obama reminds me of Ronald Reagan, in the sense that no matter what his opponents throw at him, it seems to roll off Obama without inflicting much harm.
Reagan was of course dubbed "The Teflon President" for his seeming ability to avoid major negative repercussions from stories that otherwise might have gobbled up a mere mortal in the Oval Office.
This GOP Senator said he definitely agreed with the Obama-Reagan comparison, wondering if it would also translate to gains down the ticket for Democrats in many states.
Usually, GOP candidates can count on getting about 10% of the African American vote. But what happens if Obama is at the top of the ticket?
This Senator said it would certainly raise turnout in the black community, which could have a major effect on statewide races, a negative one for some Republican incumbents, along with John McCain.
Another GOP worry is about state legislative races, which could also be tipped by Obama Coattails.
Just one more thing for the GOP to worry about before November.
