McCain Stays Domestic

By Jamie Dupree

While Barack Obama continues his overseas trip today, John McCain stumps again in New England, as he returns to New Hampshire, the state that pumped new life into his struggling candidacy for the White House back in January.

While McCain has been jabbing at Obama over his views on Iraq - and battling with the New York Times to get an opinion piece printed in their paper on the issue - the McCain camp is trying to swing some of the focus back to domestic issues, like the high cost of oil and gasoline.

"Gas prices - $4, $5, no end in sight, because some in Washington are still saying no to drilling in America.  No to independence from foreign oil," the ad says.

"Who can you thank for rising prices at the pump?"

Then you hear the chant of "Obama, Obama."

Team Obama was having none of that, as they zapped the McCain Camp with a little Monday Rapid Response.

"John McCain said recently that 'our dangerous dependence on foreign oil has been thirty years in the making, and was caused by the failure of politicians in Washington.'  As someone who's been in Washington for 26 years, Senator McCain is one of those politicians," said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor.

I'm sure GOP lawmakers in the Congress would approve of McCain's gasoline price ad, because that's one of the few issues right now where the Republicans might have a chance to get a crowbar between the ribs of the Democrats in 2008.

Meanwhile, there seems to be increasing buzz that McCain might pick his running mate soon - maybe as soon as this week.

Maybe this is just an effort to steal away a bit of attention from Obama and his trip overseas, or maybe it's the real deal.

Stay tuned.
