After watching the almost bitter exchanges between Barack Obama and John McCain in recent days, I'm wondering if America's fascination with Campaign 2008 is soon going to turn into disgust and finger pointing.
It's very clear to me that Obama the candidate and Democrats in general
are ready to be more aggressive than their past Presidential campaign
record might indicate (see Kerry, Dukakis and McGovern.)
It's very clear to me that some things about Barack Obama really
aggravate John McCain, making the GOP standardbearer more than ready to
go toe-to-toe with the future Democratic nominee.
While the Democratic race for the White House has been anything but
negative or overly aggressive, the tone changes when we go from two
Democrats who don't have too many policy differences to two candidates
who have a lot of different views.
So much for the quaint times of watching the Delegate Scoreboard and wondering what's up with Hillary and Bill.
This is going to be a classic campaign that will test the nerves of the voting public.
One thing that I really don't care for is the never-ending jabs between
campaign advisers, where each day they see if they can zap out a snappy
two-line elbow to the chops.
I would also bet that as the rancor increases, that will drive some
Hillary supporters to Obama, and some disaffected Republicans back to
McCain.
But we also may some others throw up their hands and exclaim, "I don't want to vote for either of these bums.
