It wasn't but a few years ago that Republicans were threatening to do away with the right of Senators to filibuster judicial nominees, as Democrats held up nominations made by then President Bush.
I figured it wouldn't take long for the GOP to switch sides on that argument now that they don't control the White House anymore.
On Monday, Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma - who tried to hold up many nominations of President Clinton - made clear that President Obama's very first judicial nominee isn't going to be fast tracked through the Senate.
"I want to address the problem of the David Hamilton nomination," Inhofe said on the Senate floor.
"I would announce that I will filibuster that nomination," Inhofe declared.
Inhofe certainly has that right, as do all 100 Senators. Of course, back when Democrats were the ones filibustering judges, it was the absolute wrong choice to use that dilatory tactic according to Republicans.
But now we get to see Republicans say it's okay to filibuster judges, while Democrats do their own back flip as they start criticizing the GOP for threatening to use the filibuster on judicial nominees.
In other words, the two parties will have flipped and flopped so much that they will have basically taken up the argument that the other was making during the Bush years about filibusters and judicial nominations.
Anyone here remember the "Nuclear Option?"
That was when Republicans were thinking about outlawing filibusters against judicial nominees. No more 60 vote super majorities would have been needed. Democrats cried foul.
So now as we listen to the debate over judicial nominees of President Obama, cover your eyes now and then and try to figure out who is saying what.
Is the party now threatening filibusters the one that was against filibusters just a few years ago?
Is the party that will hotly oppose judicial filibusters also the same one that was so in love with that parliamentary tool just a few years ago?
Yep, you go from the minority to the majority and from the majority to the minority, and suddenly most lawmakers start parroting the arguments that they were denouncing before the last election.
This is what I love about this place.
