Cap and Trade Update

By Jamie Dupree

As we move towards a final vote in the House on what's known as the "Cap and Trade" bill, I thought I would list the Democrats who voted against proceeding to debate on the measure dealing with global warming. It's rare to see so many members of the majority party vote against the "rule" that governs debate, because that means they are going against their leadership - in this case, Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Here are the 30 Democrats who voted no on the Cap and Trade rule:

Altmire (PA)
Baird (WA)
Barrow (GA)
Boren (OK)
Bright (AL)
Carney (PA)
Childers (MS)
Dahlkemper (PA)
Davis (TN)
DeFazio (OR)
Doggett (TX)
Foster (IL)
Griffith (AL)
Halvorson (IL)
Harman (CA)
Hill (IN)
Holt (NJ)
Kucinich (OH)
Marshall (GA)
Matheson (UT)
Melancon (LA)
Minnick (ID)
Mitchell (AZ)
Nye (VA)
Rahall (WV)
Ross (AR)
Salazar (CO)
Shuler (NC)
Stark (CA)
Taylor (MS)

This is a really interesting list, because there are both liberals and conservatives here.

This means some liberals think the bill has been weakened too much in recent days, while it hasn't been changed enough to win over more conservative and moderate Democrats.

If the Democrats only lose 30 votes, then they can squeak by with a win.  But if it goes up another five or six, it could doom the bill.
