It wasn't that Democrats in Congress were in denial about the loss of the late Sen. Ted Kennedy's seat in Massachusetts, but listening to their various explanations of what it all meant was an interesting exercise on Wednesday.
The bottom line from Democrats? Scott Brown's win had nothing to do with health care.
"I don't want to boil it down to one thing or one issue," said White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, who rejected the health care narrative. "I think that's to oversimplify a lot of different factors."
It was the same up on Capitol Hill.
"The frustration that came out in Massachusetts, was an economic frustration," said Rep. David Scott (D-GA), who waved off talk that health care was the number one reason the Democrats lost in Massachusetts.
"I don't think it's proper to make it out as some kind of referendum on health care," said Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL), "because Massachusetts already has health care reform."
Grayson instead dumped on candidate Martha Coakley and blamed her for the implosion.
"It is remarkable to think that someone running for Senate in Massachusetts would think that Curt Schilling is a Yankees fan," said Grayson.
Republicans meanwhile hailed Brown's win as a giant message on health care. They'll get to repeat some of that as Brown arrives in Washington later today.
He will meet with Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), the GOP Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and others.
Can you say "rock star" treatment? He will dominate the news today most likely.
