Undecided Races Update

Previous Posts

By Jamie Dupree

It's been ten days since the November elections, but a number of races remain undecided around the country. Most of the action in recent days has been in Alaska, where officials have been counting absentee and write-in votes.

That has prompted a series of legal maneuvers by GOP nominee Joe Miller, who is trying to disqualify as many write-in ballots as possible that might go to Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).

So far, Murkowski is still winning more than enough votes to keep her in the lead, and analysts think she has a very good shot at becoming the second Senator to ever win election by write-in, the other being Strom Thurmond in 1954.

Meanwhile, there is still action in about a half dozen House races.

Today, officials in Kentucky will do a re-canvass for a number of state races, as well as the race involving Rep. Ben Chandler (D-KY) in KY-6.

Chandler leads by more than 600 votes over Republican challenger Andy Barr.

Votes are still being counted in a number of other races that remain too close to call:

NY-1 Rep. Tim Bishop (D-NY) remains behind by less than 400 votes, as his GOP opponent is going to go to DC for freshmen orientation - even though the race is still in limbo.

NY-25 Rep Dan Maffei (D-NY) is behind by over 600 votes as absentee ballots come in.  Maffei has privately told some on Capitol Hill that he does not expect to win.

IL-8 Rep. Melissa Bean (D-IL) keeps edging closer and closer, but she still trails by over 300 votes, with more absentees still to be tabulated.

TX-27 Rep. Solomon Ortiz (D-TX) is again requesting a recount, after his first petition was rejected by elections officials.  He trails by over 800 votes.  One interesting note is that if he loses after the recount, Ortiz will have to pay for it.

Meanwhile, Democrats have declared victory in two races in California, CA-11 and CA-20, though neither Republican has conceded defeat as yet.
