Despite some protest votes from a sizeable chunk of Republican lawmakers, the House easily voted yesterday to approve a 3-week budget plan with $6 billion in cutbacks.
The bill is expected to be approved later this week in the Senate, shifting the next government shutdown deadline to April 8.
54 Republicans voted 'No' on the temporary budget, as a number of more conservative lawmakers made clear that they want deeper cutbacks, instead of short term budget plans that have an average of $2 billion per week in savings.
"It is trying the patience of at least the Republicans in this House," said Rep. Steve King (R-IA), who says it's time to add in not only deep cutbacks, but a variety of policy riders like one that would block money for the Obama health law.
Here is the list of GOP opponents to the 3-week CR:
Akin MO, Amash MI, Bachmann MN, Bartlett MD, Barton TX, Benishek MI, Burton IN, Campbell CA, Chabot OH, Chaffetz UT, Duncan SC, Flake AZ, Fleming LA, Franks AZ, Garrett NJ, Gingrey GA, Gohmert TX, Gowdy SC, Graves GA, Hall TX, Harris MD, Heller NV, Huelskamp KS, Huizenga MI, Johnson IL, Jones NC, Jordan OH, King IA, Labrador ID, Lamborn CO, Landry LA, Long MO, Mack FL, McCotter MI, Mulvaney SC, Paul TX, Pearce NM, Pence IN, Pitts PA, Poe TX, Rehberg MT, Rigell VA, Ross FL, Schmidt OH, Smith NJ, Southerland FL, Stearns FL, Stutzman IN, Sullivan OK, Tipton CO, Walberg MI, Walsh IL, West FL and Wilson SC.
Just as interesting maybe were the 85 Democrats who voted for the short term budget bill, as they delivered the votes to approve this stop gap plan.
Altmire PA, Baca CA, Barrow GA, Berkley NV, Bishop GA, Bishop NY, Boren OK, Boswell IA, Brady PA, Braley IA, Butterfield NC, Capps CA, Cardoza CA, Carney DE, Carson IN, Castor FL, Chandler KY, Cooper TN, Costa CA, Courtney CT, Cuellar TX, Davis CA, DeFazio OR, DeGette CO, Deutch FL, Dicks WA, Dingell MI, Doggett TX, Donnelly IN, Doyle PA, Engel NY, Fattah PA, Gonzalez TX, Heinrich NM, Higgins NY, Himes CT, Holden PA, Hoyer MD, Inslee WA, Israel NY, Keating MA, Kildee MI, Kind WI, Kissell NC, Langevin RI, Lipinski IL, Loebsack IA, Lowey NY, Luján NM, Matheson UT, McCarthy (NY) NY, Michaud ME, Miller NC, Moran VA, Murphy CT, Owens NY, Pascrell NJ, Perlmutter CO, Peters MI, Peterson MN, Pingree ME, Polis CO, Price NC, Quigley IL, Rahall WV, Ross AR, Rothman NJ, Ruppersberger MD, Sarbanes MD, Schiff CA, Schrader OR, Schwartz PA, Sherman CA, Shuler NC, Sires NJ, Smith WA, Speier CA, Stark CA, Thompson CA, Van Hollen MD, Visclosky IN, Walz MN, Wasserman Schultz FL, Welch VT and Wu OR.
The list of Democrats was a mix of liberals, Blue Dogs, and some seeking higher office like Rep. Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who joined a number of Republicans like Jeff Flake (also running for Senate) in breaking with their party leadership.
What's next after Senate approval? Supposedly both sides say they want to cut a deal on the rest of this budget year, which runs out on September 30.
But looking at the calendar, I have to wonder about that.
The shutdown deadline will be three weeks from Friday, on April 8.
Congress is off next week. So, nothing will happen during that time.
When lawmakers return after a week off, it takes a couple of days to get things moving again. Suddenly it will be March 30 or so.
Then there will be a week left before a shutdown. Congress wants to be out of town by April 15 for a scheduled two week break for Easter.
I heard a lot of talk about compromise in the hallways yesterday, but I didn't hear anyone offering compromise.
Stay tuned on this one.
